February Bookgroup - Comments on Breath

Please feel free to add your comments on Breath.

All in all, most people disliked this. The Other Fiona was an exception: she felt it was a get exploration of what it means to be an adolescent and to be floundering in a world where you don't know what you are supposed to do/feel/be. She felt that Sando & Eva took advantage of Pikelet, without consciously knowing they were doing so, as they themselves were adults who hadn't grown up.

Most of us felt, as Robert said, that it was 2 books hastily shoved together, a great book about surfing, and a very hurried peice about auto-eroticism - with bad joins between the 2. We were unanimous in awe of his beautiful writing; as Deb W said, it was like reading poetry in the style and metre of 'Banjo' Patterson.

Dinner was absolutely fantastic, thanks to Jane's friend Julia, whom we expect to be as good a doctor as she is a cook - anyone who can make such tasty food is bound to be a great nurturer! Jane has set the bar very high - take away just won't seem the same!! But it is far easier on the hostess ;-))

January Bookgroup

Was held at Deb E's place, and was a joint celebration for Fiona H's birthday!! Happy birthday was sung and Felicity made a stunning cake and this is the recipe. A lovely White Chocolate Bundt cake, and Felicity's looked just like the picture!!!

Everyone was present, so all know what a lovely time we had at Deb's. The table looked lovely with tiny candles for everyone, silver placemats holding square white plates, and happy birthday napkins to round it all out!

The book we were (supposed) to be discussing was The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry. Some of us enjoyed it, others thought it was an interesting though not earth shattering read. Sheila and Deb W felt that the ending was too 'pat'. Deb E and Jane said they saw it coming, and The Other Fiona said that she saw this in her job all the time, that people separated by circumstances were nevertheless drawn unconsciously to each other. That is an interesting theory that bears further discussion!

Felice and Deb W said how much they enjoyed the writing, that the author used beautiful turns of phrase that made them stop mid-read to savour.

There seemed to be some lively discussions at the north end of the table but this writer was too far away to eavesdrop!

Some books were suggested, see next post for details.
